St. James' Arch (Arco de Santiago)
St. James' Arch, an integral part of the historical and architectural complex of Plentzia's old quarter, is of great historical value. It is the only known remains of a wall that once surrounded the town (although a municipal document refers to the use of the space left by the remains of the walls to build the "Arrartena" house (now the "Batzoki") in the eighteenth century and another similar construction at the entry to Artekale. Aesthetically, it has little to recommend it: it is a simple arch between two buildings at the vertex of the square. However, it is of immense historical value in that it constitutes the only remains of the walls that surrounded the town of Plentzia, erected around 1236, and which with time and the expansion of the urban nucleus have fallen into ruin or disappeared in the walls of other houses. |
